Do You Stink

Now you may be thinking I’m talking about your personal hygiene or bodily cleanliness; but actually I’m talking about your character. In Ex.5:21 we read, "And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour (to stink; marginal reading; made us odious, NAS) to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us." Again in Gen.34:30, "And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house." Also "And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men." II Sam.10:6. Now the point in all the above passages, is that the way we act and conduct ourselves before others can be a stench to others spiritually. We can behave in an repugnant, stinking way. We use this concept today, by saying things like: "Their attitude stinks!" or concerning someone’s very unpleasant behavior we may say "They stink, do you know what kind of life they are living?"

Now it is also possible to give off a pleasant aroma spiritually and morally. Paul said, "Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:" II Cor.2:14-15. Paul talked about the Philippians’ support and sacrifice, "But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God." The godly saint gives off a sweet aroma. The wicked ungodly man or woman is a stench to God and to man.

So, Do You Stink?
