I Want to Know It
Here is some practical wisdom from an aged brother who lives in Louisville Kentucky, his name is George Witt. He told me one time about how a lot of the Witt family drink whiskey. They had asked George about drinking some, he said he told them, First, I don't like the taste of whisky. Secondly, if I going to have a good time, "I want to know it." I don't want you to tell me the next day. You sure had a good time. It would seem that folks could learn both from a practical standpoint and from a biblical standpoint the foolishness and sinfulness of getting intoxicated. Consider, I Pet.4:3-4, "For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:" Also, in 1 Peter 5:8, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" The word sober is defined, "To be sober, to be calm and collected in spirit. To be temperate, dispassionate, circumspect. Yes, men ought to want to be sober minded, not have a mind, clouded and confused by the influence of alcohol. I see some very practical wisdom in these words of George. If we are to love life and see good days, it will be by doing good, and being in our right mind. If we want to experience the good things of this world, we need to be sober and aware of what is going on, to fully appreciate and benefit from the good things from God. I would have to be like George, if I have a nice time in something, I want to know it myself, not you telling me the next day, you sure had a nice time.
