Is It Really Your Choice?

Through the years I have encountered many people who said they were shopping for church. Maybe they had moved to new community or been an upheaval at their “old church” and they were looking for something new. Most folks arrive like shoppers in the mall with a list of preferences and expectations:

  1. They want a “friendly church” church where many people will seek them out and make them feel special.
  2. They want a church that is conveniently located near their homes for convenient access.
  3. They want the preacher to be dynamic and charismatic and stir the souls of men with emotionally charged sermons punctuated with humor.
  4. They also want a church with a full social schedule. Special get-togethers must occur regularly, and they especially want many special events to keep the children involved. They may want a “children’s church” so the adults can worship without distraction.
  5. Many are looking for programs in which they can personally become involved with some one coordinating all the activities.

While these factors can affect decision-making, it seems to me that the wrong person is in control.  On the one hand we declare that we are “servants to Christ” but on the other hand we act as the “boss” to decide what pleases us. Should it not be a matter of what pleases Christ, and we will do all we can to follow will? After all, he is the one who died to purchase it. (Acts 20:28). He established the church and dictated its work and worship.

The preacher is just the messenger, “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace and bring glad tidings of good things” The emphasis is on the Word, not the messenger.

I should be concerned about finding the church that was talked about in the New Testament, that is teaching the truth. Then I can assume my role in making it all that it can be by my efforts to support its activities. My choice must be the Lord’s choice. It is his opinion that counts.
