Auction Barn

A brother in another congregation was telling about what happen in a Bible class one time. He said they were discussing the topic of divorce, and 4 or 5 folks were arguing all the same time. He said one was saying "I believe ..." and another was speaking at the same time, "Well I believe.."; this brother said "Why it sounded like an Auction Barn!" May we ponder a few things about these kinds of "goings on."

First there is nothing wrong with any good Bible discussion, for folks to participate and study the Word. Even disagreements can be present, but the overriding quest is a search for truth. Bible study is to be just that, Bible study, not some sort of mere "creed rehearsal." But folks must be extra careful not to get out of line, and be inconsiderate in a spirited Bible discussion. When 4 or 5 people are speaking at the same time, and the thing sounds like an "Auction Barn", how can we hope to gain or give any understanding like that. Can you be talking and listen at the same time? I would think the golden rule would fit and work well in this kind of situation, Mt.7:12. Another verse comes to mind on this matter, Jm.1:19, "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." Yes by all means, lets ever seek, knock, and ask in our search for truth, searching the scriptures daily, but let’s not let our Bible classes degenerate to an "Auction Barn" status.
