Sanitized Terms
I heard an interesting phrase the other day on the radio, "Sanitized Terms". The word sanitize means to make clean, free from germs, to make sanitary, thus not to endanger health. An example was given about this point being made. Instead of a person lying, a sanitized term will be used, "Oh, he just mis-spoke about the matter." Now of course, a person can do all the sanitizing he wants about lying, but it will not clean up, it still going to be sinful, and spiritually unhealthy. In Ephesians 4:25 "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another." I thought about a few other "Sanitized terms" used today.
Homosexual conduct and behavior have had attempts by folks to sanitize it. They just call it, "A loving relationship" or maybe they will say, "It’s just an alternate lifestyle." God still calls it sin, Romans 1:26-27, " For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet."
Adultery is another sin that folks have made an attempt to sanitized. They may say, "So and so is having an affair." Now God has not changed his mind on the subject beloved! Romans 13:9 "For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
Children who are defiant, rebellious and are just being disobedient are sometimes excused with sanitized terms. "Oh they have a behavioral disorder." or "They are just hyper." Paul said in IITimothy 3:2, "For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy."
May we ever call sin by it’s name and not seek to use "Sanitized Terms."
