Stuffitis
The other day while we were on vacation we stopped at a bookstore called Books-a-Million. On the way out I saw a book called Financial Peace, which had an interesting section called "Avoid Stuffitis (worship of stuff)." I thought, my oh my, does that not describe and depict a lot of us, afflicted with this spiritual disease called "Stuffitis"! Jesus perfectly described "Stuffitis" in the parable he taught in Luke 12:15-21," And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." The problem is not things per-se, but our attitude toward them. Stuff is to be used not worshipped. Things are not our Creator, but we can create good with them. Being selfish and self-centered, leaving God out of the picture, was the kind of mindset that the rich fool had. Paul said that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Not that money is the root of evil, but the love of money, "Stuffitis" if you please. Yes, the great Physician can cure us of this disease, if we will apply the gospel balm to our hearts.
