WWJD

The other Sunday night I went with some of the folks of the Pine Grove congregation over to Pizza Hut after church. Some of them were talking about a bracelet and necklace that has become popular to wear among denominational folks. The letters above, WWJD, is what is on these bracelets and necklaces. These letters stand for: "What Would Jesus Do". One girl was relating that a friend of her's was wondering why she didn't wear one, intimating that she was not what she ought to be as a Christian. Let me make a couple of observations.

First, the thought that we ought to consider in any given situation what Jesus would do, indeed is a good concept! Paul said we should have the mind of Christ, 1 Cor. 2:16, "For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ". Again in Phil. 2:5, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus". Yes, a disciple seeks to be like the master, to think and act like him.

Secondly, there is a problem with the above related story. Thinking that one "must" wear a bracelet to be a good disciple is in error. If Jesus had wanted us to wear a bracelet or a necklace, with WWJD on it he could have easily said such, but he didn't. The danger in such thinking is that spirituality is only "bracelet deep". The truth of the word of God is to be impressed in our hearts and minds, not in some superficial, shallow, depthless, external way upon our arms or necks.  Jesus spoke out against such shallow spirituality in Matthew the 23rd chapter. Christianity is a heart religion, that affects us to the core of our souls and being, not in some mere external way.
