Popish Persons

In the introduction of my edition of the King James version of the Bible, is a letter of dedication by the translators of 1611. One of the interesting statements was this. So that if, on the one side, we shall be traduced by Popish Persons at home or abroad, who therefore will malign us, because we are poor instruments to make Gods's holy Truth to be yet more and more known unto the people, whom they desire still to keep in ignorance and darkness; . . . we may rest secure, supported within by the truth and innocency of a good conscience, having walked in the ways of simplicity and integrity, as before the Lord . . . The thought that sticks out to me is the statement about APopish Persons who shall traduce, malign, vilify, slandered against the good work of translating the word of God into the common language of the people. APopish Persons are people who want to keep folks in ignorance and darkness. It is no surprise that these kind of folks have been around well before the first Pope of 606 AD. The sinful, ungodly attitude that has been manifested by APopish Persons has been seen in folks like Diotrephes, AI wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. The man of sin talked about in 2 Thess.2:3-7, AWho opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. v.4. APopish Persons are folks like Paul spoke about in I Tim.6:3-4, AIf any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings. Yes, APopish Persons are arrogant rebellious people when it comes to the will of God, they have a mind of their own, not the mind of Christ.
