Blessed Are The Merciful

We continue our study of the beatitudes by looking at Mt. 5:7, "Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy." Mercy is a great quality that we must seek to incorporate into our lives and hearts. It is essential we be merciful toward our brethren and fellow man. In Mt.18:21-35 we read about a discussion that Peter had with the Lord about forgiving our brother, until seven times? Which Peter no doubt thought was more than generous. But Jesus said, "I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven." vs.22. Then in verse 23-34 he give a parable of one who was forgiven this incredible debt by the king, but when a fellow servant was in debt and asked for mercy and compassion, there was none, vs.33, "Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?" And for him being unmerciful we read Jesus conclusion, vs.35, "So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses." Another example of mercy is found in the story of the Good Samaritan, in Luke 10:25-37. After a man was beat up both the priest and the Levite failed to offer help, but a certain Samaritan did offer help. Jesus asked in vs.36, "Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?" The response in vs.37, "And he said, He that showed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise." Yes, mercy has many applications, and if we want to receive mercy from God, we must be a merciful. Lk.6:36, "Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful."
