Breaking Bread

We continue our study of the New Testament scriptures, in what is required in worshipping in spirit and in truth, for us to be a true worshipper that God the Father desires, Jn.4:23-24.

Today we want to look at what Ac.2:42 calls "breaking of bread." Breaking of bread here refers to the Lord’s Supper. The Lord Jesus himself instituted the Lord’s Supper. In 1 Cor.11:23-26, "For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of meFor as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come." We are to remember the death of our Lord Jesus Christ and his sacrifice, as we partake of these emblems. Yes, there are just 2 emblems in the Lord’ Supper, we eat the bread and drink the cup. We are do it in a worthy manner, not an empty ritual, "For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body" vs.29. Finally, we are to observe it on the first day of the week. Ac.20:7, "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight." Indeed, what a simple, yet profound memorial to our Lord and his death!
