Lynching
I was watching the news the other morning and they were talking about a 1946 case that is being reinvestigated about a lynching that took place. It told that some people that were shot several hundred times, and point out that lynching does not mean a hanging, but to kill by a mob. The dictionary says: To kill (an accused person) by mob action and without lawful trial, as by hanging, usually in defiance of local authority. Though many that have been lynched, have been hanged, it is being killed by a mob and can be done in different ways, as in the 1946 case where people were shot several hundred times.
Thus I thought about Stephen who was lynched by a mob of angry people. "When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul." Acts 7:54-58. The means of killing him was by stones. So we can say that they lynched Stephen there in Jerusalem. Now keep in mind that this was a group of devote religious people that made up the Jewish Sanhedrim Council. Not a violent street gang that does not profess faith in the Lord and what is right. These people were not interested in fairness, truth, righteousness, the Law, civil authority, but a group of self interested, smug, haughty people that got mad when Stephen preached the truth and called a spade and spade and stepped on their toes. Thus the lynching took place many years ago. People haven’t changed through the years.
