Lending God Money

I suppose the title of this article is kind of astounding and shocking. Why would one need to lend God money? Is God running short on funds? Has hard times befell God that he needs a loan? Did not Paul say in Acts 17:25, "Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things."? So God does not personally need anything as Paul said in this text. So we inquire, what does it mean to lend God money? The idea comes from a text in Prov.19:17. "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again." So we see, that when our hearts move with pity or compassion to help the poor and needy, to give them a helping hand, we are in a sense: "Lending God Money." From time to time we will have occasion and opportunity to help a truly needy person. Now this passage is not talking about helping the lazy with a handout, for Paul said, "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat." So folks who are lazy and slothful and that will not work, (it does not say, that can not work), we should not give them money, not even food. Yet a truly needy person, that we can assist them with a helping hand, from a heart of mercy, is what the passage talking about. And when we help out the poor, especially those of the household of faith, Gal.6:10, we are "Lending God Money." Then the text goes on to say that God will repay the one who "lent him" money, when we gave a helping hand to the poor. God may repay with blessings in this life or blessings in the world to come, or both. But if you Lend God Money, don't you think that He can repay? Of course He can! He has done it over and over through the ages.
