The War on Poverty

January 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of President Johnson's State of the Union speech. In that speech he declared an "unconditional war on poverty in America." I suppose him and the legislators meant well in their minds back in 1964, but it seems there was a lack of understanding of the word of God. For Jesus said in Matt.26:11, "For you have the poor with you always, but you do not always have Me." The words of Jesus; the word of God WITHOUT EXCEPTION stands true. Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." Matt.24:35. It is impossible to win the war that was declared by President Johnson 50 years ago. There were poor people in the patriarchal age, in the Mosaic age, in Jesus day, in the first century, in 1964 and yes even after 50 years of warfare on poverty, and 20 trillion dollars spent to stop it, there is poverty today. The poverty here certainly does not rival the poverty in many third world countries, in magnitude nor percentage. Some people counted in "poverty" here would be counted "well to do" in many countries in the world. So some of these of issues and terms are relative. Some poverty comes by great misfortunes in life, sure as disease, sickness, and accidents. Some poverty is because of the nature of people. Many I am afraid are just plain lazy and are happy to sponge off others, or off society. Some are just happy to get by. They simply live a "hand to mouth" kind of existence. One thing for sure, we live in a great land of opportunity. People, who are willing to work, and use their money wisely, can have adequate provisions in our country. Some excel more than others, but that is the nature of humans for people have a variety of talents and abilities. Communism does not work, socialism is a failure, but liberty and the willingness to work and toil does achieve good results. The war we need to wage is the unconditional war against sin and wickedness! Through Christ we can each personally win the war.
