Demas Hath Forsaken Me
In the New Testament we read about a brother in the Lord named Demas. He was a preacher of the gospel. Paul said in Col.4:14, "Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does Demas." And then again he is spoke about in Philm.23-24, "Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers." All these good brothers are mentioned as co-workers in the kingdom of God. There was a real camaraderie and friendship as co-workers in the work of the gospel. You find lots of references like these where brethren worked together and work concurrently in the work of the Lord. So it was with Demas that Paul commends and recognizes him as a good brother in the Lord. But later Paul has to write, "For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia." 2 Tim.4:20. It is always sad when a fellow laborer in the work of the Christ turns from the truth that they once preached. No doubt it hurt Paul to think about and then to have to write about Demas in this way. What happen with Demas is not new with him, nor is he the last one to forsake the Lord and his truth. Even in our day we have brethren that from time to time that have forsaken the old paths. Listen to this exhortation, "Thus saith Jehovah, Stand ye in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way; and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls: but they said, We will not walk therein." Jer.6:16. Indeed in our own area recently, we have had a co-worker to forsake the Old Paths of the Lord's way. It just hurts to think of this good brother who made a wrong turn(s) somewhere and now I don't know if any can reach with him the word. "Demas hath forsaken me" it rings true today. :-(
