The Crucifixion of Christ
Have you ever realized what Christ did for each one of us when He died on that cruel cross? Crucifixion is a death sentence, a nailing or tying of the hands and feet to a wooden beam and being left to hang there until death by exhaustion or asphyxiation.
Crucifixion was an execution, it was also a humiliation, by making the condemned as vulnerable as possible.
Jesus obtained sufferings way before He hang on the cross. We read this in
Matthew 26:67-75, Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; (to beat Him with their fist) and others smote him with the palms of their hands, meaning they struck him sharply, especially with the hand). Can you imagine pain he endured?
Not only did he suffer pain but endured extreme humiliation. Matt. 27: 26-31 tells us, released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.28 And they stripped him and put on him a scarlet robe.29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
The Bible describes to us the final hours of Jesus on the Cross
- God draws a supernatural darkness (separation from the Father)
- Jesus speaks four times, his last words:
(1) In agony, "My God, why hast thou forsaken me? Matt. 27:46
(2) To those standing by knowing all things were now accomplished, that the scripture would be fulfilled: "I thirst!" John 19:28
(3) to a breathlessly waiting world, a cry of victory:
"It is finished," John 19:30
(4) having completed the awful task: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit"
Luke 23:46
So, when we sin, we need to take it seriously, because it tells us in Hebrews 6:4-6 how when we do sin we crucify the Son of God all over again, it reads, It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, And who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
Jesus died that cruel death, so that we could have an eternal life.
